Here's my take. Jobs/Apple has some dirt on Google or Eric. Is black mailing to use it if Google doesn't do what they want. But Google won't help Apple if they leak the dirt. Job's says... "They're (public or press) is going to see it all eventually (meaning the truth is going to come out eventually) so who cares how they get (i.e. how they find out.)

This task switcher is nice but probably Apple used the icons (option 2 or 2222?) because they're more recognizable than some little screenshot to decide which app to open.

I have never heard of this guy. But having Geocities, Yahoo, and Microsoft on a resume doesn't inspire a great deal of confidence.

Also concerning is their stance on internet freedom, gun control, and Afghanistan. 4 years of majority government will be very interesting, I doubt we will see another conservative government for a while once it's over.

They will do a ton of damage in those four years, so get ready. The more I read about them , the more they scare me just as much as our conservatives do.

I would definitely take sandy bridge over what is essentially a 5+ year old CPU.

I don't think the new Intel graphics is horrible as some people suggest. But then again, I am only a light gamer.

If you set the settings to low, you can pretty much run anything on anything. I remember being able to run Crysis on a GMA950.

The reason I spec'ed the Dual 1.25 GHz Powermac to a single 2.4Ghz Dell machine is that at least according to the www.cpuscorecard.com website, these are comparable in terms of speed. Both were given a score of 88-89% (whatever that means).

At the suggestion of onemoof, I went back looked at lower end machines. Comparing a 17" 800 Mhz iMac against a 1.8 Ghz Dell machine (again, based on the www.cpuscorecard.com ratings, iMac=55%, 1.8ghz P4=62%), The Dell was actually the more expensive machine: $2,148.00 for the iMac (including 3 year AppleCare Protection Plan), $2,296.00 for the Dell. The base price for the Dell is $699, but once you add in a 17" LCD screen, a DVD/CD burner, and software that corresponds to all the iApps, the price evens out.

You could even take the $148 you'd save by buying the iMac and get a full price .Mac account. :)

I can print out all the detailed specs if anyone is interested, but trust me -- I am interested in showing that Apple machines are worth their price.

So for "consumer" machines, the iMacs certainly hold their own in price against similarly outfitted WinXP machines. But for top of the end machines, there still is a price differential to be reckoned with.

This makes me feel better -- can't wait for Xmas so I can get an iMac!

At least his income tax won't go up this year, right? :eek: :D

Agree 100% - as I said in my original post, I don't think Apple are in any way culpable here: It's not their job to set prices for apps or in-app purchases. I also think Parents need to accept responsibility and watch their kids more carefully.

My only issue with this is the exploitative behavior of the publishers of the Apps - I can't think of any reason for charging the huge prices they do apart from someone thinking "Some parents are dumb and won't know how to stop their kids spending huge wads of cash on in-app purchases. We can make loads of money by using this to our advantage".
That shouldn't be what in-app purchases are used for: even if it doesn't break any rules, it's not at all ethical.
I know businesses exist to make money, but they shouldn't do it in an unethical and immoral way IMO.

I got no good answer for you Lee, I didn't vote for that party. Maybe the minority position of the last two conservative government gave them a softer image than before, maybe it was due to the lack of a strong Liberal leadership, maybe people were tired of going to the polls and wanted a 4 year break... I got 'nothin. :o

I'm afraid that instead of a 4 year break, you're merely going to get broken. I'm serious, after reading up more on these people, you guys are gonna have a very tough time with them. Trust me, they're gonna do what they say they're gonna do. They're idealogues.

I agree with you. New CPU, memory, cameras, etc are enough of a bump. You don't need it completely redesigned it's only been a freaking year.

When the current form-factor is fundamentally flawed:

1. Fragile build materials (glass that shatters)
2. Antenna reception issues (documented)

I don't think it's out of the ordinary to expect Apple to review and update the design of the phone. The iPhone 4 was their biggest design failure since the Mac Cube -- I can't believe they'll sit on it for another year.

Oh wait, Apple never admits they effed up. They'll keep this form factor for a decade just to prove a point.

I'm getting really sick of companies that complain whenever they're met with competition. They love capitalism until it's working against them. Target and Wal*Mart are acting like little children who don't get their way.

Under the Sherman Act, what Target and Wal*Mart are doing falls under the category of antitrust. Attempting to manipulate the market through the use of contracts and threats aimed towards hurting competitors is defined as antitrust. If Target and Wal*Mart go along with this, a class-action lawsuit can be filed against them for forcing us to pay their prices for DVDs without a lower-priced alternative.
Since people seem to have missed my earlier point when the claim was the failure of the free market:

this is the market in play. This appears to be a business dispute, not governmental involvement. The free market requires communication between businesses to maximize profits.

As for the Sherman, the Act was designed to protect consumers from the leveraging of monopoly power to conspire to control a market. Here, there is no conspiracy to control the market. Rather, there is a complaint by one business entity regarding the activities of another with which it does business. If Target and Wal-mart were conspiring to split the market (or if the industry conspired with T and WM), that would trigger the Sherman.

I've never understood this time glitch that happens on devices. I mean you have this gazzilion operation per milisekund technology that can produce so many amazing things, yet has problem with simple time changes :confused:.

So I downloaded it directly and tried to update it. It told me I didn't need it.
Trekkie, since your machine and mine came about the same time, ours should be about the same. I checked in Profiler, and didn't need to update the SMC. Have you seen anything useful in the EFI update?
