Project Runway Season 8 finalist Mondo Guerra presented his fall 2011 collection at Fashion Week El Paseo in California. In many ways, it's simply a continuation of his Project Runway finale collection, utilizing exactly the same motifs, shapes and design elements. That's probably as it should be because the public has rather limiting expectations from a reality show contestant and they want to see what they saw on their TVs.
It's a typically Mondo collection of bright colors and contrasting prints in black and white, rendered mostly on body-hugging or skin-baring party dresses, but we think he may have gotten a little defiant in the wake of the PR judges' criticisms and ramped up all the elements to eleven. A designer has to stick to his aesthetic but the criticisms he received at the time of the finale, while in some ways misguided (because they were based on trends), were centered around the idea of viability as a money-earning professional. We suspect Mondo would say he's not as interested in being in Macy's as he is in being true to his point of view.
But we have to be honest: we'll give him this collection, but if the next one (assuming there is one) is another set of skin-tight dresses in black and white plaids, checks, and stripes, then the judges will have been partially proven right. Get this out of your system, Mondo, then get on with showing the world what else you can do.
