Thanks to Black Swan, you can expect to see a lot of ballet-inspired looks on the runways in the near future. There's a symbiotic relationship between the fashion and entertainment industries and they are constantly pulling inspiration back and forth from each other. It doesn't take an expert to see that Natalie Portman's movie is having a Moment; one that the fashion industry is almost helpless to follow. Given Galliano's stated inspiration of Rudolf Nureyev for this collection, you can see how he's getting in ahead of the crowd, but because he's John Galliano, he manages to spin that out to cover a range of looks that pay homage not only to Nureyev's dance career, but his Russian background and his explosion into international stardom in the '60s. It's a biography in runway format. As always, you have to do a lot of mental editing to pick out the pieces, but we love the coats (no surprise) and those mod-inspired skinny pants. We'd like to think we can pull off a big puffy black and white mod jacket, but we're thinking that's strictly for the under-25-with-a-waist-measurement-to-match crowd. Still it's a fun, visually exciting, laser-focused collection we can't help but love.
